Oxford Health, United Health Care, UHC or Optum? NY Health Insurance 2019 Review. Good for you?

You probably found us on Google by searching “Is Oxford Health good?”.

PLEASE DON’T READ YET. WE ARE STILL WORKING ON THIS

However, we are here to answer, rather, is it this company a right fit for you?

First of all, how are we qualified to provide reviews for you in reference to Oxford Insurance?

I have personally been working with brokers for less than 10 years, there are many brokers whom I know that are more knowledgable on this subject matters, but we do know a lot more than our clients and most average people, as this is a company that we are dealing with almost daily.

We had gotten swamped with people calling us up asking us about, is this insurance company good & we are educating people about, rather how to determine if this insurance company is right for you.

Writing a comprehensive article and making a Youtube video covering all these materials is our hope of a more efficient way of doing our job.

That way, if you woke up at 2 am in the morning and feel like looking for an answer, hopefully, this page & our yet to be recorded video will serve you well.

As I said earlier, we got compensated from Oxford, hence, Hence, our review may be “Biased”. It is also good for you to know that, even if you are not using a broker to help you, the monthly premiums you will be paying to Oxford, Healthfirst or Emblem will be the same. So, you get to use us for free.

Write an ARTICLE TO EXPLAIN WHAT IS THE DIFF BTW BROKER VS AGENT HERE.

We are a broker that represents most insurance carrier located in NY, from UHC, Empire BCBS, Healthfirst & many other.
If you got kicked out by Oxford/UHC, you can call us.

We got compensated for helping New Yorker & beyond to address their insurance needs.

Our Monthly Comm Disclosure

Hence, our royalty is towards our clients. As we can recommend any insurance plan that is suitable for our client, – YOU and no matter which insurance plan you choose, the premium you pay is the same, whether you use us or not.

The following is a screen capture from our broker portal. An insurance broker will be compensated around 3-4% of your total insurance premiums.

Again, your monthly premiums will be the same regardless if you use a broker or not.

We have a mostly smaller group on our book, as the larger group, we have placed them with PEO.

As for smaller company groups, Oxford Health is the most flexible and powerful carriers out there.

With a company as Healthfirst is a bra bra bra…I assumed you can read.

The company has grown about 5 fold in terms of membership count to 1.2 million members in downstate New York since their CEO Pat Wang told the helm from 2008.

Downstate NY On Nassau County Only!!!

Healthfirst network is limited to NY downstate & Nassau County. .i.e. The 5 Boroughs, like Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx & Staten Island plus Nassau County.

SO, It is not for people who live outside the service area.

Healthfirst is well known in offering Medicaid, Child Health Plus, and Managed Long Term Care aka Medicare/Medicaid plans.

It is traditionally a strong player in the low-income marketspace.

Healthfirst has expanded to Nassau county thru partnering with Greatneck based Northwell Health, or what used to be knowns as NSLIJ.

Manhattan Chinatown Locations, Flushing, 8th Ave?

Does the Healthfirst service center location scream immigrants to you? It does. they are traditionally a very strong player in the lower income segment.

In fact, there are very well known in the Medicaid & Medicare/Medicaid plans to offer. In fact, being 5 stars in Medicare

Healthfirst started from Medicaid managed care & eventually expanded to Medicare and has been getting rave reviews from doctors & even users alike.

Since about 2 years ago, there have started also selling full price commercial insurance for groups.

Their commercial group plan offering is VERY STABLE WITH UHC “CHOICE PLUS” TO COMPLIMENT THEM NATIONWIDE.

There started offering commercial plans starting in 2017. As I have met many clients who didn’t know about it.

The plans offered are Healthfirst Pro and Pro Plus, Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO) plans for small-business owners and their employees, and Healthfirst Total, an EPO for individuals.

Oxford’s Pro & Con.

The pro is, if you are an immigrant, Healthfirst is very immigrant friendly with many doctors speaking a second language.

PRO IS VERY GOOD NETWORKS, CON IS WAY MORE COMPLICATED. (Please click to find out for yourself)

Because Oxford Plan is so complicated, it is almost always done with the help of a Broker, that is why there have always been one of our favorite. Empire BCBS is very complicated as well, but we don’t like to deal with them, that is for the sake of our client, we will leave it in another topic.

There are no good or bad plans, company, remember, it is always what is best for you.

GDP As Big As Many Countries. The last I checked, as we were writing this, UHC

of Healthfirst.  Healthfirst is NY minority population preferred insurance provider? TB Continue…

If you don’t know, the majority of the NY population is the minority.

So Healthfirst is as famous as Metro Plus, which is an insurance company specializing in low-income insurance. As I recalled, we also started selling their commercial insurance 2-3 years ago.

After CEO Pat Wang took office (2008-2018, he also an immigrant), the company’s business grew five times. You can see Healthfirst service is getting worse and worse (Five star rate is 1-2 years before). Maybe it is because most of their clients are individual or just walking in or contact them via phone, and the staffs are lack of experience, so they did not give the customer satisfaction service.

We searched & was very surprised to find out that there are no Japanese Doctor within the Zip Code, while we can get 11 pages of Japanese Doctor by searching another carrier doctor

Healthfirst has a very good relationship with doctors. From what I know, So doctors like this company. But policies often change. So even if the clients convert the insurance company, they still need us. Because we are the bridge between clients and the insurance company.

I believe that most of you who read these articles are interested in an individual health plan. Perhaps most people don’t know Healthfirst also selling the group health plan. Just like a restaurant, when it is just opened, both the service and the product are good, but after a long time, the quality may be difficult to guarantee. Just like the group plan of Healthfirst. So far it good, but it is hard to say later. And the above comments are all about the individual plan.

If you are looking for the prestigious Columbia & Cornell are not in networks. These doctors generally only accept PPO insurance plans from those PPO carriers, like Aetna, Cigna, Empire BCBS & Oxford/UHC.

Healthfirst review?

We usually are Let’s review Healthfirst from three places:

1st: BBB Reviews

https://www.bbb.org/us/ny/new-york/profile/health-insurance/healthfirst-inc-0121-51675

Rating from BBB itself is #BS (click to read why BBB is BS). You really need to read the real user reviews, it wasn’t good really due to the fact that those are review left from people mostly on their Medicaid, Medicare or Dual Plans. As I mentioned earlier, HealthFirst was traditional Medicaid provider. Hence, it is uncommon for the employee to not treat their clients on Medicaid with full respect, however, that is beyond what I can say.

From many of my clients who have been on the plans for about 2 years now, there are very happy with their treatment and reimbursement issue.

2nd: Yelp reviews

Yelp reviews also have been around for a good while, hence, many or most of their negative reviews are also from their legacy Medicaid, Medicare & Dual product lines. The 2019 review we are providing here for their Group plan, hence, wait for it, for our final review in the end.

Yelp review does bring up a very valid point. Healthfirst has been expanding so quickly and in fact, just this last week, we have a meeting with Healthfirst management and was being told that there are upgrading the system backend. Hence… see below. (See a screen capture from our interaction with Healthfirst)

Our Client Dr. Yu, one of our Heallthfirst Group plan client told us that one of the employees is missing from the group renew list.

ABOUT HEALTHFIRST INSURANCE COMPANY Healthfirst health plans

At first glance, most New Yorker’s might recognize the Healthfirst insurance company as a provider of Medicare, Medicaid and individual health plans to lower income consumers. However, their organization has been steadily expanding their insurance products from its start of Medicaid plans, Medicare and now in the small business market. The company was founded in the early 1990’s by a group of hospitals under the backing of the Greater New York Hospital Association. Healthfirst serves more than 1.2 million members in downstate New York and Nassau county. “Quick Tip! Use our group health comparison tool to get a free quote for your small business.”

HEALTHFIRST HEALTH INSURANCE NETWORK

This not-for-profit insurance carrier has established alliances with some of the most prestigious hospitals in the New York City area. Hospitals such as Phelps, Jacobi Medical Center, Montefiore and Northern Westchester Hospital just to name a few. The Healthfirst provider network is relatively small compared to most other major health care providers. Their network of doctors and hospitals are limited to the New York City area, boroughs and Nassau county. As the company increases its membership base, they will undoubtedly expand their alliances to more doctors and medical groups in other regions.

WHY HEALTHFIRST FOR SMALL BUSINESS?

If you are a small business owner, you might want to consider this company as your new group health insurance provider. After all, there aren’t too many choices for small business health insurance in the state of New York. The main providers are Oxford, Oscar, Aetna, Emblem, Empire Blue Cross and MVP and now, Healthfirst. Their pricing is competitive but not the lowest. If your business and workers are located in New York City, you might find this company a good fit for your business.

HEALTHFIRST GROUP HEALTH PLANS

The company offers a robust suite of EPO (Exclusive Provider Organization) health plans. Compared to other health care providers, their plan offerings are relatively simple. They offer 2 EPO health plans designs: Pro EPO and Pro Plus EPO. The only difference between the EPO Pro and EPO Pro Plus is that PRO includes the option to purchase adult dental and vision insurance. Both plan designs meet all the essential health care requirements as mandated by The Affordable Care Act (ACA). They include Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze options.

SMALL GROUP HEALTH PLAN REQUIREMENTS

For an employer to be eligible for a Healthfirst small group health plan, the employer must have at least 1 eligible employee on payroll and no more than 100 employees. THE HEALTHFIRST BOTTOMLINE

We like this company because of the simplicity their health plan offerings. Their plans are simple to understand and not confusing like other insurance carriers. Although their network coverage is rather limited to lower New York, we are confident they will expand as they gain more customers. With such a limited group health marketplace as we have now, it’s refreshing to have an additional company to offer our clients.

COMPARE HEALTHFIRST INSURANCE QUOTES

The best way to decide if Healthfirst is right for your business is to shop around. We provide real-time group health quotes from our comparison tool. You can compare quotes, rates, and services for all our top health insurance companies. This information will help you decide if Healthfirst Insurance is right for you and would meet your insurance needs.

We have to share some experience from other prospects. We are the insurance expert for immigrant. All types of immigrant are from Canada, Europe and other parts of Asia. Lately we have a client who found us to maybe the same handwriting in Japanese. We are dealing with some Janpanes clients. So they just want to find Japanese doctor, but we can not find one of the Jap doctors in Healthfirst network within his zip code. Healthfirst is EPO plan.  (insert which link here? you said cigna ppo link?)

Healthfirst for Small Group Health Insurance Plans

The Healthfirst provider network is quite small when compared to most other major healthcare providers. It’s essentially limited to the New York City area, boroughs, and Nassau County. In these areas, Healthfirst caters to 1.2 million members. Although they are still growing in the small group health field, they are one of the top Medicare insurance providers. Their pricing is competitive, however, not the cheapest. If your business and workers are located in New York City, you might find this company a good fit for your business. If you are a small business owner, you might want to consider this company as your new group health insurance provider.

About Healthfirst

Healthfirst is a not-for-profit managed care organization that serves over 1.2 million members in downstate New York. It was founded in the early 1990’s by a group of hospitals under the Greater New York Hospital Association. The company is also continuously expanding their product line. For example, they began by offering Medicaid managed care, Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug (MAPD) plans, and long-term care. Now, they are expanding into the small group health insurance market. They also offer commercial products from the New York State of Health branded at Healthfirst Leaf and Leaf Premier Plans.

Healthfirst Health Plan, Inc.

Healthfirst Health Plan, Inc. (HFHP) is the licensed HMO doing business as Healthfirst Medicare Plan and Healthfirst New York (commercial). Formerly known as Managed Health, Inc., HFHP was first managed by Healthfirst in July 1997 and then became a subsidiary of the company in August 1998. The service areas for their Medicare Plan include the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, Nassau and Westchester counties (not all plans are available in all counties). Furthermore, the service areas in New York include the Bronx, Kings, Manhattan, Queens, Richmond, Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Healthfirst PHSP, Inc.

Since 1994, Healthfirst has operated a Prepaid Health Services Plan (PHSP) serving Medicaid members in New York City under a certificate of authority granted by the State of New York. In 1995, the Healthfirst operating area expanded to include Long Island. They developed Healthfirst PHSP to meet the objectives of New York State’s Managed Care Act, which changed the way Medicaid beneficiaries received healthcare. In 1999, Healthfirst implemented its Child Health Plus (CHPlus) program to expand its ability to provide health care services to eligible children through participation in the state’s CHPlus Program. This offers reasonably priced health care coverage for the children of working parents who do not qualify for Medicaid and cannot afford unsubsidized health insurance.

Healthfirst Small Group Health Insurance Plans

They offer Medicaid, Medicare Advantage, Child Health Plus, and Managed Long Term Care plans. Leaf Qualified Health Plans and the Essential Plan are offered on NY State of Health, The Official Health Plan Marketplace. In 2017, they started offering Pro and Pro Plus, Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO) plans for small-business owners and their employees. They also released Healthfirst Total, an EPO for individuals.

To view their group health insurance plans and rates, view our comprehensive rate sheet.

Group Insurance Plans

The company offers an array of EPO (Exclusive Provider Organization) health plans. Compared to other healthcare providers, their plans are relatively simple. They offer 2 EPO health plans designs: Pro EPO and Pro Plus EPO.

The only difference between the EPO Pro and EPO Pro Plus is that PRO includes the option for adult dental and vision insurance. Both plans meet all the essential health care requirements mandated by The Affordable Care Act (ACA). They include Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze options.

Provider Participation

Healthfirst hospitals and their affiliated providers may be contracted to participate in their programs. Because contracting differs among the programs, it is important to note that a provider contracted to provide services for one program is an out-of-network for all of the other programs.

Provider participation is also office-site specific. Although a contract may cover multiple locations, if an application has not been submitted or approved for a particular office, services rendered there are considered out-of-network.

Reviews

Healthfirst currently has an F rating on BBB for advertising issues and its failure to respond to 20 complaints. They have had 24 complaints in the last 3 years– 7 of which closed in the last year. On Yelp they have 67 reviews and only one star. Many of the reviews express difficulty in finding a provider.
