1.UnitedHealthCare – Oxford Joint/UnitedHealthcare Group 70 million members

Oxford Medical Insurance has served in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut for over 30 years. Although it was acquired by the United Medical Insurance Company in 2004, many Chinese New Yorkers still choose to work with this company. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce to you: since Oxford was acquired by the largest insurance company, United Healthcare. Later, it was also allowed to operate independently to a certain extent. Since United Healthcare acquired OptumHealth , a PBM ( click on the link to learn about PBM ), many of my Chinese clients have encountered many healthcare issues.

Instead, the benefit of the acquisition is that Oxford Health now covers emergency medical care in 50 states and other countries (including but not limited to China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan). Their PPO plans even apply to the best cancer hospitals in New York such as MSK Memorial Sloan Kettering. The PPO program is only applicable to the company’s group medical plan.

Founded in 1977 and headquartered in Minnesota, UnitedHealthCare is the largest health insurance and health information technology company in the United States, including UnitedHealthcare, Ovations, AmeriChoice, Uniprise, Specialized Care Services, and Ingenix. In 2012, it was named by Fortune magazine as the most respected health insurance company in the US insurance and managed care company. There are currently about 75 million policyholders, covering 50 states and more than 50 countries.

2.Anthem New York Blue Cross Blue Shield, 39.4 million members


Founded in the 1940s, it was formerly known as WellPoint, Inc., which was changed to its current name in December 2014. It is the second largest health insurance company in the United States with approximately 37.5 million policyholders. 3. Aetna (Aetna Insurance Financial Group, USA), 23 million members

Aetna is the oldest medical insurance company in the United States. It was founded in 1850 in Hartford, Connecticut– surviving the World Wars and the Great Depression. Aetna’s nationwide medical network has more than 458,000 physicians and 4,681 hospitals. The service area covers 50 states.

4.Health Care Services Corp, 15 million members

Health Services – HCSC- was formerly a hospital services company and changed its name to Healthcare Services Company in 1975. HCSC is a non-profit health insurance company in the United States. The company was founded in 1936 and is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. The United States has a network of offices. The Health Care Services Corporation (HCSC) is the licensee of the five states of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. It focuses on operations in Illinois, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

As the fourth largest health insurance company in the United States, the company has more than 22,000 employees and serves nearly 15 million members. It offers group life, disability, and dental solutions, as well as a range of other personal solutions. The company also offers a variety of care management and healthcare resources.

5.Cigna (CIGNA Insurance Group), 14.7 million members

Founded in 1792 in Pennsylvania, it is also one of the oldest healthcare companies in the United States, formed by the merger of Insurance Company of North America and Connecticut Gcncral Life. Cigna’s predecessor, Insurance Company of North America, was the first US insurance company to be allowed to operate an insurance business in China (1897). In July 2015, Anthem wanted to acquire Cigna for more than $48 billion, making it the largest deal in the US healthcare industry. However, in February 2017 and US regulators have not ratified the merger.

CIGNA Global Health Benefits is a business unit of CIGNA. The company is headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware, near Philadelphia. Other CIGNA Global Health and Welfare departments are located in Visalia, California, Greenock, Scotland, Shanghai, China, and Antwerp, Belgium. Sales offices are located in North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.


Cigna Global & China (China: China Merchants)

China Merchants Cinn Life Insurance Co., Ltd. (referred to as ” Zhangshang Xinnuo”) is a Sino-foreign joint venture life insurance company featuring health insurance. The Chinese and foreign shareholders are China Merchants Bank and American Cigna. China Merchants Bank and Cigna are among the top 500 in the world.


6. Humana, 14.23 million members

Founded in 1961, the company has its headquarters in Kentucky. Humana has grown to become the world’s largest hospital company in the 1980s, with more than 20 hospitals in the United States and abroad, and more than 22 million policyholders. June 2015, Aetna trying to use $ 37 billion acquisition of Humana Inc., then in January 2017 and US regulators have not ratified the merger.

7. Centene Corp. , 11 million members

Centene Corporation is a large publicly traded company and a leading multi-line healthcare company that serves as the primary intermediary for government-funded and private insurance medical programs.

Centene also contracts with other medical and commercial organizations to provide professional services including behavioral health care services, case management software, correctional insurance, family health services, life, and health management, vision, pharmacy welfare management and telemedicine services.

Centene was founded in Wisconsin in 1984 as a single health program and has become a national leader in healthcare services. And in September 2017 acquisition of non-profit insurance company Feidalisi.

8. Kaiser Permanente, 10.7 million members


Founded in 1945 and headquartered in Oakland, California, it covers Kaiser Foundation Health Plans, non-profit public health organizations, and Permanente Medical Groups, with 9.1 million insureds. 17,425 doctors, 48,285 nurses, 38 medical centers and 608 medical offices.

9. Highmark, 5.3 million members


Highmark is a non-profit healthcare company with its headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA. It is a large non-profit health insurance company in the United States that operates a number of for-profit subsidiaries.

It is a health insurance company in Pennsylvania, purchased in 1996 and became an insurance company in West Virginia and later Delaware. As Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, it is primarily available in 29 counties in western Pennsylvania. As Highmark Blue Shield, it is sold in 21 counties in central Pennsylvania and the Lehigh Valley. It also operates through its subsidiary Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield West Virginia in all areas of the Eastern Ohio border region and West Virginia. Highmark acquired Blue Cross, BCNEPA, in northeastern Pennsylvania in July 2015.

10. WellCare Health Plans, 3.68 million members

WellCare Health Solutions began operations in 1985 and has its headquarters in Tampa, Florida. They provide managed care programs for more than 4.4 million members across the country through Medicaid, Medicare Offers, and Medicare Prescription Drug Programs. The company works with more than 407,000 contract suppliers and employs more than 8,800 people. Wellcare Health Plans, Inc. is the holding company of several subsidiaries, including WellCare, Staywell, HealthEase, Harmony and ‘Ohana. Regional offices are located in Miami, Florida; Manhattan, New York; New Haven, Connecticut; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Marietta, Georgia; Houston, Texas; and Chicago, Illinois.
